The Mukura massacre began in July 1989 against the backdrop of a military counter-insurgency in eastern Uganda's Teso sub-region. The National Resistance Army (NRA), particularly its 106th battalion, launched aggressive operations around Mukura, Ngora, and surrounding villages to root out members and sympathizers of the rebel Uganda People’s Army (UPA). On July 8, NRA soldiers conducted widespread sweeps, detaining around 300 local civilians—including men, women, and children—at Ajeluk Primary School, where they subjected them to screening and interrogation under suspicion of rebel collaboration.
