As NRA SOLDIERS COOKED 100 MEN IN STRUGGLE TO POWER IN 1989 The tragedy escalated on July 11, 1989, when soldiers marched a group of screened detainees to the Okungulo railway station in Mukura. There, troops forcibly crammed over 100 men into a single, unventilated, abandoned steel railway freight wagon (number C521083) and locked the doors. As temperatures inside rapidly climbed in the cramped conditions, soldiers reportedly lit a fire near the wagon and below, further intensifying the heat. Trapped inside for more than four hours with virtually no oxygen, the men fought to breathe; by the time the doors were finally unlocked, 69 men had suffocated to death, leaving only 47 survivors.
